Suikyo Tenmangu Shrine, located in the bustling Tenjin area of Fukuoka, is a shrine dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, known as the god of learning, and is the origin of the name Tenjin.
The shrine was originally located in the Imaizumi area, but was moved to its current location by Kuroda Nagamasa, the first lord of Fukuoka, in the early Edo period.
It is a small shrine with a uniquely Japanese atmosphere, but it is located quietly between the high-rise buildings of the Tenjin area.
There is a statue of a cow inside the shrine, which is said to make you smarter if you touch its head, so it is visited by people who wish for academic success.
Admission is free, and it is located a 5-minute walk from Exit 12 of Tenjin Station, making it easily accessible.
