Fukuoka's Railway History Starting Point: Deimachi Park and the Monument of Kyushu Railway's Origin

Deimachi Park, located in Hakata Station Front 1-Chome, Hakata Ward, Fukuoka City, was originally part of the old Hakata Station grounds. In 1965, it was transformed into a park, where the "Kyushu Railway Origin Monument" was erected. This site marks the founding of Kyushu Railway Company and the opening of Hakata Station in 1888. The following year, the railway line to Kurume was inaugurated, making this the starting point of Kyushu's railway network. To commemorate the 90th anniversary of Hakata Station's opening, a stone monument was specially established here, making it an important historical landmark in the area.

At the end of 2017, Deimachi Park underwent a comprehensive renovation, becoming part of a modern urban landscape. It also serves as a key stop for Hakata Old Town sightseeing buses, featuring six dedicated parking spaces for large buses. The park is lush with greenery, offering a tranquil space for travelers to rest, harmonizing with the surrounding historic streets. Additionally, the park hosts a "Charichari" bike-sharing station, allowing visitors to easily rent bicycles and explore Hakata's old streets and cultural attractions at their leisure.
