If You Come to Beijing Road in Guangzhou — Don’t Just Shop, Discover Its Hidden History!

#guangzhoutrip
Beijing Road is the must-visit spot for tourists in Guangzhou —
But many don’t realize that it’s so much more than a regular shopping street.

This buzzing street has been at the heart of Guangzhou for over 2,000 years — once the site of an ancient royal palace, and now packed with historic buildings, relics, and time-honored brands.

If you just pass through for a few photos, you’re missing the soul of the city.
Let me take you on a deep-dive citywalk route along Beijing Road — perfect for a one-day tour to trace the historical lifeline of this vibrant city.

① Guangdong Provincial Department of Finance (广东省财政厅)

This grand European-style “mini White House”, built in 1919, marks the origin point of Beijing Road.
More than 2,000 years ago, this was where the capital of the Nanyue Kingdom (Panyu City) stood — making it the birthplace of ancient Guangzhou’s urban core.

② Xinhua Bookstore (新华书店)

During the early 20th century, Beijing Road became a hub for bookstores. Literary giants like Lu Xun and Guo Moruo once browsed these shelves.
There were dozens of bookstores here, and sales from this area ranked number one in China back then. Book lovers — this one’s for you!

③ Tai Ping Guan Restaurant (太平馆)

Built in 1885, this is Guangzhou’s oldest Western restaurant.
Premier Zhou Enlai and his wife once dined here, and you can still order the nostalgic “Premier’s Set Menu.”
Don't miss the Banana Split ice cream — a childhood favorite for many locals. The interior is full of charming Republic-era vibes.

④ Nanyue King Palace Museum (南越王宫博物馆)

Over 2,000 years ago, the Nanyue King Zhao Tuo believed this area had excellent fengshui — and built his royal palace right here.
Today it’s a beautifully preserved free-entry museum, offering a glimpse into the very beginning of Guangzhou as a city.
