If you're looking for a postcard-worthy autumn foliage view in October, pin "Hachimantai Aspite Line"! This photo was taken on October 13, 2025!
This road is located in the Hachimantai mountains, connecting Iwate and Akita prefectures in northern Japan. It's one of the most scenic driving routes in Tohoku.
⸻
🚗 Getting there
The closest route is from Morioka Station, where you can take a bus or rental car up the mountain for about 90 minutes. Driving is recommended, as buses are very infrequent. You can rent a car from Morioka Station. The Aspite Line is only open from spring to late autumn (closed during snowfall), so October is the perfect time to see the red leaves at the top of the mountain.
On October 13, the top is beautifully red, but the bottom is still green. I think the peak season for the entire mountain is around after October 20. Each year, it's different. Check the weather forecast first.

👗 Fashion for a cool breeze
The temperature on the mountain is about 10 degrees Celsius these days. 🌬️ We recommend wearing a windbreaker, scarf, or a light sweater in a color that matches the red leaves for great photos! 📸
Don't forget comfortable sneakers or boots, as there are many viewing points to hike down to. Your legs won't tire after a walk.

💡 A little tip from a friend: • Go early in the morning to see the beautiful red leaves.
• Bring a camera or a fully charged phone, because every corner is a photo opportunity.
• If you're not driving yourself, you might want to book a day tour from Morioka or Akita. #hachimantai #morioka #tohoku #tohokuroadtrip #autumninjapan
