West Lake is named after its location in the west of Hangzhou, and is also called West Lake in honor of the famous beauty Xi Shi.
West Lake is surrounded by mountains on three sides, and there are three islands floating on the lake, including Xiaoyingzhou, Huxinjing, and Wanwandun. The total area of ​​the lake is 60.8km, of which the water area is 5.66km.
West Lake is said to have been formed about 2,000 years ago when it was part of the Qiantan River, and then mud and sand accumulated to block the Wushan and Baojishan mountains to the south and north.
There is a statue of Su Dongpo at the entrance to West Lake. When Su Dongpo was appointed as the Hangzhou governor, he ordered all the mud that had settled on the lake bottom to be dug out in order to ease the suffering of the farmers who had difficulty getting water because of the overgrown aquatic plants. Later, it was named Soje after Su Dongpo.
