The temple's official name is "Kameiyama Hokoin Daiganji Temple."
It is said to have been rebuilt by the monk Ryokai during the Kennin era (1201-1203).
In the past, the area surrounding Daiganji Temple, including the Senjokaku, five-story pagoda, and two-story pagoda, was called the Itsukushima Garan.
This temple is home to the secret statue of Itsukushima Benzaiten, created by Kobo Daishi Kukai, and is considered one of Japan's three great Benzaiten statues.
The other two are Enoshima in Kamakura and Chikubushima in Lake Biwa.
The temple grounds are greeted by a magnificent mountain gate, a pine tree planted by Taira no Shigemori, and a goma hall and Jizo hall in addition to the main hall.
