Ijen Crater (Blue Fire), East Java

The Mount Ijen hike begins in darkness, but donât let the quiet fool you â this is one of the most extreme and unforgettable volcano treks in Indonesia. We started at 1:00 AM with only headlamps lighting the rocky path. After an hour of steady uphill hiking, we reached the rimâĶ and then descended into the crater to witness the famous blue fire, a natural phenomenon caused by ignited sulfuric gas. The eerie glow flickered like ghostly flames against the pitch-black walls. It felt like walking through another dimension.
As sunrise approached, the blue fire faded â but Ijen wasnât done. The crater revealed a toxic turquoise lake, one of the most acidic in the world, surrounded by mist and the distant clink of sulfur miners hard at work. Ijen is harsh, beautiful, and humbling. Bring a proper gas mask, warm clothes, and respect for the people who mine here daily.
