📌 Fortrose & Rosemarkie (near Inverness), Scotland
🏴 Found yourself in the Scottish Highlands? Think perfect scenery, breathtaking beaches and even spotting Nessie the Loch Ness Monster if you're lucky! If you happen to be in Inverness then here's a budget-friendly way to spend an afternoon.
🚍 From Inverness I took the bus up to Fortrose, a beautiful small village right on the Moray Firth, which is the mid-point between Loch Ness and the North Sea.
⛱️ Dropping down onto the beach I then took a long walk around towards Rosemarkie. I stopped several times to take a glimpse and the scenery is just beautiful. The only noise was the waves colliding with the shingle.
🐬🚨 Eventually I reached Chanonry Point, one of the best places in the world to have a chance of seeing dolphins. A lighthouse watches over the shoreline. Patience is a virtue - you may be there up to an hour before they come out to play. Sadly for me they didn't this time, perhaps the sea was too calm.
🍕 Continuing North I eventually reached Rosemarkie where I stopped for a well-deserved pizza and pint before walking back to Fortrose by road.
⛪ Fortrose is a very pretty village at the top surrounded by fields of sheep and it even has it's own Cathedral ruins.
💡 Top tips:
🥾 Bring good walking boots - the beach from Fortrose to Chanonry has rocky and uneven pebbles
📒 Plan accordingly, if getting public transport check your options before you set off
⏰ When it comes to the dolphins you must be patient, if you want the best chance of seeing them you must allow an extra 30-60 minutes
