🇰🇷 Haenyeo Statue on Jeju Island

There are several Haenyeo statues located in various places on Jeju Island as a tribute to the traditional female divers, known as "haenyeo" who are an iconic symbol of Jeju's cultural heritage. One notable Haenyeo Statue can be found near the Sinchang Windmill Coastal Road. Jeju Haenyeo are women whose job is to go into the sea and collect seafood from the ocean floor without any mechanical devices and breathing apparatuses. They are renowned for their remarkable endurance, diving skills, and the unique matriarchal community they form. Their unique way of life and diving techniques have been recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
