The Yuci Chang family were prominent merchants in Shanxi and pioneers in Sino-Russian trade. Although the Chang Family Manor is not as famous as the Qiao Family Courtyard, it is sixteen times larger! Construction of the Chang Family Manor began during the Qianlong and Jiaqing periods of the Qing Dynasty. It covers an area of 600,000 square meters, with over 4,000 rooms, more than 50 buildings, and 13 small gardens. It embodies both the grandeur and integrity of Jinzhong architecture and the gentle elegance of Jiangnan style.
📍Address:
Chewang Village, Dongyang Town, Yuci District, Jinzhong City, Shanxi Province
🚗Transportation:
Driving is recommended, as public transportation is inconvenient. A ride-hailing service from Jinzhong Station to the Chang Family Manor takes about 20 minutes and costs around ¥30. It's easy to get a ride there, but it can be very difficult to find a ride back.
⏰Opening Hours:
8:30–17:30
💰Ticket Price:
¥80 per person🎫
🌟Highlights:
① Jing Garden: The largest garden within the manor, covering an area of 80,000 square meters, it is the largest private garden in northern China.
② The Chang family has always valued education, with their family motto being "Conduct yourself with propriety, integrity, benevolence, and righteousness." The Shiyunxuan Academy within the manor is the largest extant private academy in northern China. It is also the foundation upon which this family thrived for over 200 years and nine generations.
📌Tips:
The ice and snow have not yet melted in the garden. Although the scenery is not as lush and vibrant as in spring, it has a unique solemn and respectful atmosphere. During the off-season, there are only two restaurants outside the manor, and few shops are open inside, with only a few scattered antique shops. There's a place for archery; see if you can find it.
