Pier-2 Arts Center

The Pier-2 Arts Center, known in Chinese as “駁二藝術特區,” is a hub of contemporary art located along the harbor in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Originally an abandoned industrial warehouse area left unused after the port ceased operations, the site was transformed into a vibrant art district through the creativity of local artists and support from the Kaohsiung city government. Pier-2 is not just an ordinary museum or art exhibition; it is an open space where every corner can become a piece of art. From graffiti-decorated walls of old buildings to outdoor metal sculptures and installations, the center offers a visually captivating experience for visitors.

Upon entering the center, visitors will feel a harmonious blend of old and new. The original steel and concrete structures of the warehouses have been preserved to reflect the historical traces of the port, while the interiors are adorned with modern art elements of light, color, and sound. This creative space provides opportunities for both local and international artists to freely showcase their works. Each warehouse features rotating exhibitions, art workshops, souvenir shops, craft stores, and uniquely designed small cafes, all embodying the concept that "art is all around us."

The surrounding area also boasts many attractions, including outdoor art installations scattered throughout the space. A highlight is the large robot-like "Transformer" sculpture, which has become a popular landmark and photo spot at Pier-2. Additionally, the Hamasen Railway Museum showcases the history of Taiwan's railways, complete with intricate and realistic miniature railway models. For those who enjoy a relaxed atmosphere, the harbor-side paths offer scenic views of Kaohsiung and its steel bridges, perfect for a leisurely walk or bike ride.

At night, Pier-2 transforms into an outdoor activity venue featuring live music performances, outdoor movie screenings, and various art festivals held throughout the year. The lighting on the old warehouse structures creates a charming and romantic ambiance. Visitors can easily reach the center via the Orange Line MRT, alighting at Yanchengpu Station and walking a few minutes, or by taking the LRT tram to Dayi Pier-2 or Penglai Pier-2 stations, which are directly adjacent to the center.

The Pier-2 Arts Center stands as a symbol of revitalizing old industrial spaces into a modern hub of creativity and cultural arts in Taiwan.
