Jhaishan Tunnel in Kinmen

Jhaishan Tunnel, located in Gugang Village, Kinmen County, is an impressive underground military waterway. Stretching approximately 357 meters, it was excavated in 1961 to meet wartime needs and took five years to complete. The tunnel was primarily used for landing small boats and transporting supplies during wartime.

The tunnel consists of two parts: the tunnel itself and the waterway, both painstakingly carved by hand. The A-shaped waterway can accommodate 42 small boats, and the chisel marks on the rock walls remain clearly visible, showcasing the arduous engineering feat achieved by the military and civilians of the time. Today, Jhaishan Tunnel has been transformed into a tourist attraction and, due to its excellent acoustics, serves as a unique venue for concerts. The interior is cool and dim, so visitors are advised to bring a jacket and check the tide schedule to avoid disappointment.
