Breakaway from city life

A short ferry ride from Xiamen City, Gulangyu Island offers a breakaway from city life. It boasts houses and buildings more than 100 years old as well as protected trees even older. There are no cars on the island. All goods are transported around the island by men and women wielding rickshaws through the narrow alleys and streets. Climbing to the highest point on the island offers great views of the houses and buildings below, as well as Xiamen city and the surrounding ports. The island has many cats roaming freely with some friendly enough to be touched. There are a few bathing beaches for those who wish to soak up the sun. #oldtown #xiamen
