I spent 10 days planning a trip to Yunnan and compiled this super practical itinerary. Even first-timers can follow it directly!
🌿4 Must-Choose Routes Based on Duration
1. Kunming-Dali-Lijiang Classic Route (6-7 days)
Perfect for beginners! Explore Dianchi Lake and Stone Forest in Kunming, cycle around Erhai Lake and hike Cangshan Mountain in Dali, and visit Lijiang Old Town and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Covers all the classic spots with no disappointments.
2. Western Yunnan Loop (8-10 days)
For advanced travelers! Lijiang → Shangri-La → Meili Snow Mountain → Lugu Lake. Enjoy snow-capped mountains, lakes, and Tibetan culture. The breathtaking scenery along the way will move you to tears.
3. Xishuangbanna Route (4-5 days)
A must for tropical lovers! Watch elephants at Wild Elephant Valley, take stunning photos at the Botanical Garden of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and visit the Starlight Night Market for Dai cuisine. It feels like stepping into "Little Thailand."
4. Hidden Gems Route
Avoid the crowds with this one! Visit Qiunatong in Nujiang, Nirong Village in Diqing, and Huadianba in Dali. The pristine landscapes are incredibly healing, but transportation can be tricky, so plan ahead.
📸 Instagram-Worthy Spots
- Erhai Lake in Dali: Ride an electric scooter along the S-curve road in Panxi Village for amazing shots! Watch the sunrise at Longkan Wharf, enjoy freshly baked baba in Xizhou Ancient Town, and don’t miss the sunset boat ride.
- Lijiang Old Town: Visit Mufu Palace during the day to learn about history, and find a cozy bar at night to enjoy live music. For a quieter vibe, head to the nearby Shuhe Ancient Town.
- Jade Dragon Snow Mountain: Book tickets and cable car passes in advance! Visit the Glacier Park for snow-capped mountain views and Blue Moon Valley at the foot of the mountain for "Jiuzhaigou-like" photos. Wear light-colored clothes for better pictures.
🍜 Must-Try Yunnan Cuisine
- Cross-Bridge Rice Noodles: Try the authentic version in Kunming! Hot broth cooks the ingredients and rice noodles, creating a flavor so good you’ll want to lick the bowl.
- Wild Mushroom Hot Pot: A summer specialty! Make sure to choose a reputable restaurant to avoid poisoning. The freshness is unparalleled—once you try it, you’ll understand.
🚗 Transportation Tips
Yunnan’s attractions are spread out, so renting a car is recommended for flexibility and time-saving. If you prefer public transportation, check schedules in advance to avoid inconvenience.
