[Kyoto Prefecture/Kamo Mioya Shrine] I'm glad I went in 2023! Shrines in Kyoto Prefecture ②

Kamo Mioya Shrine in Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City

It is the Ichinomiya (first shrine) of Yamashiro Province, and is commonly known as Shimogamo Shrine because it is located downstream of the Kamo River.

It is surrounded by trees on a vast site, and this rich nature is affectionately called "Tadasu no Mori".

The deities enshrined are "Kamo Taketsunumi no Mikoto", who is said to have founded ancient Kyoto, and "Tamayorihime no Mikoto", the mother of Kamo Wakeikazuchi no Mikoto, the deity enshrined at Kamigamo Shrine. The two deities are enshrined in the west and east halls, respectively.

In front of the main hall, there are seven shrines called "Kotosha", which are assigned to each of the twelve zodiac signs.
It is recommended to visit the shrine as it is the guardian deity of the year of your birth.

As a World Heritage Site,
the atmosphere in the grounds is wonderful, and just walking along the approach to the shrine feels like your soul is cleansed!
