Hōkan-ji Temple (commonly known as the Yasaka Pagoda, or Yasaka-no-tō) is a stunning five-story wooden pagoda in Kyoto’s Higashiyama district—often seen standing tall above the charming streets of Ninen-zaka and Sannenzaka. Founded in the 6th–7th century, likely by Prince Shōtoku, based on legend—and built to house relics of Buddha . Surviving Reconstruction: The current structure dates to 1440, rebuilt by Shogun Ashikaga Yoshinori. It’s an Important Cultural Property and the only one among Kyoto’s major pagodas open for climbing .
