Located in Kibune, Kyoto's inner sanctuary, Kifune Shrine is an ancient shrine dedicated to Takaokami-no-kami, the god of water. Nestled along the clear Kifune River, the shrine is also known as a power spot for matchmaking and romantic fulfillment.
The rows of vermilion lanterns lining both sides of the approach to the shrine resemble a portal to another world. The mystical atmosphere is particularly striking after rain or in the winter snow, making it one of Kyoto's most popular photo spots.
Comprised of three shrines—Honmiya, Yuinoyashiro (Nakamiya), and Okumiya—each offers different benefits. Yuinoyashiro is particularly popular as a god of matchmaking. It's said that Izumi Shikibu, a Heian-period woman, visited the shrine to pray for a revival in her marriage.
The water fortune-telling oracle is also a specialty. By floating a slip of paper in the temple grounds' spring water, you can experience the mystical sensation of seeing the characters emerge.
The shrine's charm lies in its changing seasonal beauty: dining on the riverside terrace in summer, autumn leaves in fall, and snowscapes in winter.
