Fengtang Alley, this name sounds a bit mysterious. It is located in the central part of the Macau Peninsula, starting from Rua do Wo Long and Rua do José Antonio Amadeus in the east, and extending to Rua do Confessionos, Rua do Gaoyuan and Rua do San Sheng in the west. This slope road not only has an interesting name, but also has a historical story behind it.
The name of Fengtang Alley comes from "Fengtang", which actually commemorates a leprosy hospital that was once opened here. This hospital is the first infectious disease hospital established by the West in China. Later, a simple wooden church was built near the hospital to house the statue of the Virgin Mary. This church is the predecessor of Our Lady of Hope Church. Because the church is located on a sloping street, the name "Fengtang Alley" has been passed down.
Turning into a branch road from Fengtang Alley, the sight before you is amazing. The narrow streets are paved with exquisite mosaics, and steps are built in an orderly manner on the slopes at the intersections. The buildings and walls on both sides are painted in Macau’s unique bright yellow color, shining brightly in the sun. Albergo San Luis is not only a great place to take photos, but also a great place to experience Macau’s history and culture.
