Introducing Qiandeng Ancient Town

Qiandeng Ancient Town is located 15 kilometers north of Kunshan City, on the border between Suzhou and Shanghai. With a history spanning over 2,500 years, the town is the hometown of the renowned patriotic scholar Gu Yanwu and the birthplace of Kunqu Opera. Qiandeng was originally named "Qiandun," a reference to the Wu-Yue rivalry. The name "Qiandun" stems from the Gaodun, 30 miles south of Kunshan, which was the thousandth mound.

The town is home to not only the Yu’s Pawnshop, which is known as “China’s No. 1 Pawnshop”, but also the Ming and Qing Dynasty stone-paved streets, which are “unique in Jiangnan”, and the Nirvana statue of Sakyamuni meticulously carved from precious Burmese white jade; as well as attractions such as the Gu Jian Memorial Hall, Qinwang Mountain, Shaoqing Garden, Yanfu Temple, Sanqiao Yaoyue, and Qinfeng Tower.

A Qing Dynasty poem by Fang Haosi reads: "Thousands of towers rise one after another, reaching the sky, even stunting wild hawks."
