The Matsue Desei Inari Shrine, located in Teramachi, Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture, dates back to the 12th century. Originally enshrined on Mount Kameda (formerly known as Mount Suetsugu), where Matsue Castle stands, it was venerated as the patron saint of agriculture and pioneering. Successive feudal lords, including Suetsugu Kiyomasa, Horio Yoshiharu, the founder of the castle, and the lord of the Matsudaira clan, held this place in deep reverence. With the abolition of feudal domains and the establishment of prefectures during the Meiji era, the shrine was relocated to its present location in Teramachi in 1888 (Meiji 21), where it became widely known as Desei Inari.
The shrine's principal deities are Uga Mikami (the god of grain and commerce) and Hitoda Betsu-no-Mikoto (the god of bravery and order). Numerous other deities are also enshrined, including Takeumutsuchi-no-Mikoto, Nozusu-no-Kami, Otomo-no-Mikoto, and Mizunami-no-Okami. These deities offer blessings for agriculture, commerce, military luck, maritime transport, and recovery from illness. The shrine's patronage is also encompassed by Suesha Tenmangu Shrine and Ebisu-jinja Shrine, extending its reach to encompass a wide range of blessings, including blessing birth, business success, physical and mental health, good fortune, and successful experiences.
The name "Dushise Inari" derives from the belief that it is particularly effective for birth and prosperity, making it a popular place for students, businesspeople, and job seekers to pray. Today, it ranks alongside Funare Inari and Komori Inari as one of Matsue's three major inari shrines, enjoying significant popularity. While strolling through Matsue, why not visit this shrine, once ravaged by war and fire but now revitalized after the Heisei era reconstruction, and pray for happiness and hope? ð
