From Matsumoto to Kamikochi takes less than 2 hours. It's recommended to go in the morning to have ample time to enjoy birdwatching, mountain views, and nature. Alternatively, staying overnight in Kamikochi allows you to wake up to stunning scenery, which is highly recommended.
🚆 How to travel from Matsumoto to Kamikochi:
1. Start at Matsumoto Station.
Walk to the nearby Matsumoto Dentetsu Station (Alpico Line), located in the same building as JR Matsumoto Station.
2. Take the Alpico Line train.
Route: Matsumoto → Shin-Shimashima
⏰ Duration: Approximately 30 minutes
💴 Cost: Around 710 yen
3. Arrive at Shin-Shimashima Station.
After getting off the train, walk a few steps to the Alpico Bus station (located right next to it).
4. Take the Alpico Bus.
Route: Shin-Shimashima → Kamikochi Bus Terminal
⏰ Duration: Approximately 1 hour 10 minutes
💴 Cost: Around 2,500 yen
5. Arrive at Kamikochi Bus Terminal.
From here, you can start exploring attractions like Kappa Bridge, Taisho Pond, and Myojin Pond.
🎫 How to purchase tickets:
- You can buy a round-trip ticket (train + bus) at Matsumoto Bus Terminal (next to JR Matsumoto Station).
- Simply tell the staff: "Kamikochi round trip ticket please."
- Approximate cost: 4,500–5,000 yen per person.
🏞️ Kamikochi opening period:
Open for visitors: Mid-April to late November.
Best times to visit:
🌸 Late April – May: Snow melts, creating a beautiful contrast of white mountains and clear rivers.
🌿 July – September: Lush greenery, perfect for hiking.
🍁 October: Stunning autumn foliage.
🧣 Closed during winter (December–April) due to heavy snow and road closures.
Additional tips:
❌ Private vehicles are not allowed in Kamikochi 🚫. You must use buses or shared taxis to access the area.
