Lake Toba is a must-visit tourist destination if you're on holiday or traveling to Medan or the surrounding North Sumatra Province. Known as the largest lake in Indonesia and even Southeast Asia, the lake is located south of Medan, precisely in the Bukit Barisan Mountains, flanked by seven regencies in North Sumatra. It's also known as the largest volcanic lake in the world, with an area almost the same as Singapore.
The lake boasts a Hanging Rock (Batu Gantung) on its shores, said to be inspired by a famous Batak folktale. The origin of this statue is believed to stem from the myths circulating there. Near the shores of Lake Toba, there's also the Sipisopiso Waterfall, located in Tongging Village. You can reach this waterfall by car. Once there, you'll have to descend many small, slippery, and steep steps. You'll also be rewarded with a breathtaking view of Lake Toba and its refreshingly cool air.
