Nagasaki World Heritage Church

#SeptemberDestinations2025
Oura Catholic Church is one of the churches built after Japan's end of isolation. It's a tourist attraction with a fee. It's a Nagasaki UNESCO Heritage Site, one of Japan's most important and precious Catholic cultural heritage sites, and a highly valued Christian National Treasure! The Gothic church features beautiful stained glass windows over a century old, reflecting different colors at different times of the year. It was built by French missionaries in 1864. Oura Catholic Church's official name is the Church of the Twenty-Six Martyrs of Japan. At a time when Catholic missions were banned in Japan and missionaries were being persecuted, the church faces Nishizaka Hill, where the first twenty-six saints died in the line of duty, to commemorate them.
