Nagoya City's zoo opened in Tsuruma Park in 1918 as the "Nagoya City Tsuruma Park Zoo" (opened as the "City Nagoya Zoo" in 1929 (renamed the "Private Nagoya Zoo" in 1929). As the facility became too small and outdated, it moved to its current location on March 24, 1937, and was renamed "Nagoya City Higashiyama Zoo".
