Exploring Japanese Aquariums: Nagoya Port Aquarium

"Mom, life can really be like Animal Crossing!"

Getting Mr. Xu to wake up early and go out every morning is always a challenge—even an aquarium visit is no exception. Recently, Nagoya Port Aquarium canceled its performances due to the sudden passing of the killer whale "Earth," which initially left Mr. Xu a bit disappointed for not being able to see the whale. However, he soon discovered that many of the fish he caught in the game "Animal Crossing" had real-life counterparts in the aquarium, and he became completely engrossed.

Lionfish, humphead wrasse, Japanese spider crab, sawfish... He eagerly used his Animal Crossing encyclopedia on his phone to identify each one, brimming with curiosity and enthusiasm. As someone who knows little about marine life, I had to keep up with him. (It's worth mentioning that the oarfish Mr. Xu was particularly excited to see turned out to be a holographic projection...)

We've visited quite a few aquariums in Japan, but this was the first time we encountered a dedicated Antarctic research section. Mr. Xu was thrilled to see penguin couples with their chicks. While Nagoya Port Aquarium may not be the most photogenic, it was certainly the one where he explored most actively.

Unfortunately, due to time constraints, we couldn't visit the "Fuji" Antarctic observation ship next door. I had the chance to board China's "Xuelong" ship for work before, and it was a fascinating experience. Next time, I'll make sure to take Mr. Xu aboard.

💞 Highly Recommended: While some animal rights advocates may oppose animal performances at aquariums, Nagoya Port Aquarium also offers meaningful exhibits like fish fossils, Antarctic research, and sea turtle breeding programs.
💰 Must-Buy Souvenirs: Besides the fish plushies that kids love, I highly recommend the vintage diver keychain shown in the last photo—it’s abstractly adorable.
