Okinawa, Japan | Shikina Garden Pond: Reflections on the Red-tiled Pavilion, the Tranquil Heart of the Ryukyu Kingdom
Entering Shikina Garden, the first thing that catches one's eye is the clear pond. Like a mirror, the water captures the red-tiled roofs, arched bridges, and lush green trees. A gentle breeze ripples the surface, seemingly slowing time down.
The design of Shikina Garden's pond blends the symmetrical beauty of Chinese gardens with the natural charm of Japanese gardens, enhanced by the unique island charm of the Ryukyu Islands. Standing quietly on the pond's edge is the hexagonal pavilion, Rokkakudo, once the venue for the Ryukyu king to welcome guests. Gazing at the pond from its edge, one can imagine the grandeur and elegance of the diplomatic scene of those days.
