Shuri Castle, Okinawa's most iconic tourist destination and a spiritual center for the Okinawan people, was destroyed by fire on October 31, 2019, and is currently undergoing restoration work. As a result,
we decided to take a different route to visit.
Most notably, the main hall was lost, so we are now only able to view the castle walls.
Even in its current state, the stone types, stone wall construction methods, and gate shapes—especially the color scheme—are clearly distinct from those found in castles throughout Japan.
This makes it clear that this land has had a unique culture and history since ancient times. However, it is truly regrettable that the dynasty fell and the last war turned it into a place of tragedy. I can't wait to see Shuri Castle again in 2026.
