The Temple of the Buddha at Niushoushan is one of Nanjing’s most breathtaking spiritual and cultural landmarks. It’s not only a temple but a huge underground palace built with stunning architecture, golden domes, and detailed carvings that make the whole experience feel sacred and peaceful. Inside, you’ll find a calm atmosphere that contrasts beautifully with the busy life outside the mountain.
Before entering, visitors are asked to wear protective covers over their shoes — this is a respectful gesture to keep the temple floors clean and preserve the spiritual purity of the place. The temple is very well-maintained, and you can really feel how much care has been taken to protect its beauty and significance.
Keep in mind that Niushoushan can get very crowded, especially on weekends and holidays. If you prefer a quieter and more reflective visit, try going on a weekday or early in the morning. You’ll have more time to walk around peacefully and truly enjoy the details of the artwork and architecture without the rush.
The temple itself is free to enter and is located close to the Fooding (Fo Guang) Temple, so you can easily visit both in one trip. Around the area, there are also beautiful walking paths, gardens, and viewpoints with amazing views of the mountain and Nanjing city in the distance.
It’s definitely a must-see spot if you’re in Nanjing — a perfect mix of culture, spirituality, and natural beauty. 🌿✨
