Hehuanshan – Winding Road… Heavenly View of Taiwan’s Mountains

We traveled by car from Taichung to Hehuanshan for about 5 hours. The road was very winding, and it is one of the most dangerous roads in Taiwan. As many gurus have suggested, there are sharp curves close to the cliff, so you have to drive very carefully. The average steepness of the road is 10% at an elevation of over 3,200 meters, making it the highest road in Taiwan. ()
But when we got there… we were relieved in the first second! The view of the alpine mountains was as far as the eye could see. The fog was covering the remains of the bushes. We found a field of rhododendron flowers in late spring. The atmosphere was peaceful, cool, and beautiful enough to make us forget our exhaustion. ()
We took a short walk along the path from Wuling Pass (3,275m), the highest viewpoint on the road, and stopped at Hehuanshan East Peak, which was just a short walk up to take pictures with the remains of the old elevator and the beautiful view of the mountains.
The highlight was the morning sunlight seeping through the fog… It was like standing in heaven. The atmosphere was vast, the sound of the wind surrounded us, and there was almost no sound of nature. It was an incredibly touching experience.
Be warned that the weather is very cold, and there might be snow in winter, so be sure to prepare your clothes. And always check the road conditions news because some sections require chains if there is snow or road closures like Taiwan recommends ()
In conclusion, “Yes, it is dangerous, time-consuming, but worth it.” If you like the view of tall mountains, flowers in the mist, and peace, the Mountain Drive through the brutal road to the top view at Hehuanshan is a life experience that you should really try. 💙
