Located at Piazza Museo 19 in Naples, the National Archaeological Museum of Naples (MANN) stands as one of Italy’s most important archaeological institutions. Housed in a building that once served as a cavalry barracks and prior to that the University of Naples, the museum’s roots trace back to 1777 when it opened under the Bourbons.
Inside, the collection is staggering in scale and significance: you’ll find masterpieces such as the Farnese Bull and Farnese Hercules, exquisite mosaics from Pompeii and Herculaneum (including the famed Alexander Mosaic), an exceptional Egyptian collection of around 2,500 objects, and the recently highlighted trove of artefacts recovered from illicit markets.
Visiting the museum offers not just a viewing of artefacts but a deep dive into ancient life, power and artistic achievement. The museum is open Wednesday to Monday 09:00-19:30 (last entry 18:30), and closed on Tuesdays. Many guides suggest allocating 2–3 hours to appreciate the highlights, with more time if you aim to explore in depth.
