💞Reasons to Visit:
Location and Natural Features
Shunkunitai is a sandbar located in Nemuro City, Hokkaido, separating Lake Furen and Nemuro Bay. Spanning approximately 8 km in length, 1.3 km in width, and covering an area of about 6,000 hectares, it is a vast natural area. The sandbar consists of three dunes formed over 1,000 years ago, making it a rare and valuable geographical feature.
A Sanctuary for Birdwatching 🦆
This area is home to over 300 species of birds, accounting for nearly half of the bird species observed in Japan. It is a breeding ground for special natural monuments such as the Japanese crane and white-tailed eagle. Spring and summer are ideal seasons for birdwatching here.
Diverse Vegetation and Scenery 🌱
Shunkunitai boasts Japan's largest cluster of beach roses, rare pure forests of Sakhalin fir growing on the dunes, and ancient giant trees in the third dune that resemble a primeval forest. The area offers a rich variety of natural landscapes.
