The Old Caoling Tunnel is a beloved cycling route in Taiwan, offering a journey through history as you ride along this former railway tunnel stretching over 2 kilometers. The path takes you through lush forests in New Taipei and leads to breathtaking views of the expansive sea along the Yilan coastline. This historic tunnel is a must-visit for cycling enthusiasts.
We started our trip by taking a train from Taipei Main Station to Fulong Station. Upon arrival, we rented bicycles near the station and began our scenic ride. Eventually, we reached the entrance of the tunnel. The cycling tunnel spans 2,167 meters, making it not only long but also pleasantly cool. Interestingly, the new Caoling Tunnel was constructed parallel to the old one, so when a train passes through the new tunnel, you can faintly hear its sound through the walls. At the end of the tunnel, you're greeted by a stunning view of the vast ocean, making the ride truly worthwhile. On your way back, don't forget to grab a railway bento box for a delicious treat!
