🌿 Located in northeastern Taiwan, Shifen is known for its railroad tracks running through its commercial center. Visitors can release sky lanterns to make wishes, write their wishes, and release them into the sky. There are also souvenir markets and restaurants. The name "Shifen" means "tenths," as the 10 families living there originally requested 10ths of their food. Nearby, Jiufen.
🏮Tradition of Sky Lantern Release: In the mid-19th century, thieves were wreaking havoc in the Pingxi area. When villagers descended from the mountains to the train station to collect supplies during the Lantern Festival, they would send sky lanterns up to warn others of their safety. Since the lanterns would float so high into the sky, the villagers developed the habit of writing their wishes to the gods on the lanterns. Later, newlyweds often released sky lanterns, as the word "tiandeng" sounds similar to the Taiwanese word for "have a son."
