Just two hours from Tokyo, Nikko is the perfect escape into Japan’s natural and spiritual beauty. This UNESCO World Heritage site is home to the magnificent Toshogu Shrine, a masterpiece of ornate detail and craftsmanship dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu. Surrounded by cedar forests and mountains, the air feels cleaner, the pace slower. Walk through the sacred complex, spot the famous "see no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil" monkeys, and follow trails to the scenic Kegon Falls and Lake Chuzenji. In just one day, Nikko lets you step back in time and deep into nature.
Tips for a Day Trip:
- Take the Tobu Limited Express train from Asakusa for the easiest access.
- Start early, there’s a lot to see and some places close by late afternoon.
- Wear comfortable shoes; there are many steps and forest paths.
- If visiting in autumn, prepare for breathtaking foliage.
- Local specialty: try yuba (tofu skin), a Nikko delicacy. #nikko
