Seeing the World Through a Shopping Cart — Earth Mart’s Journey of Food Reflection

Stepping into the Earth Mart exhibition at the Osaka Expo feels like entering a supermarket from Earth itself. There’s no air conditioning, no cashiers, but countless “family meals” and “food truths” from around the world. 🌍

The exhibition centers on the “shopping cart” as a core image, symbolizing the volume of food consumed by people in different countries over 10 years. From Ethiopia (0.54) to China (1.92), behind the numbers lies a huge disparity in global food distribution and a reflection on environmental footprints. 📊

The site also displays real families’ grocery lists and photos. The Jamyang family of four from Bhutan mainly consumes rice, chili, and vegetables; while the Abubakar family in a refugee camp in Chad has only the most basic grains and water on their table. These scenes are moving and prompt us to rethink the relationship between “food” and “human rights.” 🍚👨👩👧👦

The most eye-catching feature is the entire wall of colorful glass jars, each filled with different pickled items and food colors, ranging from purple to red, like a piece of art about the flavors of the Earth. There is also a calligraphy piece that reads “One Meal, One Soul,” reminding us that every bite of food carries the value of life and the weight of culture. 🖌️

This is not just an exhibition but a global reflection on food, resources, and lifestyles. Earth Mart makes us realize how our choices affect people on the other side of the world. 🌐💡
