Otaru Canal - A must-see landmark in Otaru with over a century of commercial history

The historic Otaru Canal was completed in 1923. It was an important waterway supporting Otaru's maritime transportation at that time, and red brick warehouses were built on both sides. Later, with the development of transportation, the function of waterway gradually declined, and now it has become a representative tourist attraction of Otaru.

There are 63 gas lamps installed on the pedestrian path. At dusk, the gas lamps are lit, and the red brick warehouses are illuminated by the lights, showing a wonderful atmosphere different from that during the day, which is very romantic.
Currently most of the warehouses have been converted into restaurants, museums and cafes. After taking photos and paying your respects, you can go shopping in the surrounding shops or visit the restaurant in the red brick warehouse to experience the history and culture of the Otaru Canal many years ago!
