The Otaru Canal is a famous canal located in Otaru City, Hokkaido, Japan. Back when Otaru was a major trading port, the government constructed the canal to facilitate the transport of goods and ship docking. As time progressed, cargo transportation shifted from ships to land, and the canal's practical value gradually declined, becoming a cultural and tourist landmark for Otaru today.
Many stone warehouses from the Meiji and Taisho periods remain along the canal's banks. These have now been converted into restaurants, cafes, shops, and museums, showcasing a fusion of history and modernity. Many renowned souvenir shops, such as Rokkatei, have large flagship stores here.
Find any remaining items at Tanukikoji Shopping Street! You'll find drugstores, souvenir shops, department stores, and numerous chain ramen shops.
