Gaios is the capital and main port of Paxos, a small Greek island located in the Ionian Sea, just south of Corfu. This picturesque town is built around a natural harbor that is protected by two small islands right in front of it: Agios Nikolaos and Panagia. These islands create a narrow channel, like a small fjord, which shelters the port and makes the waterfront a very calm place.
The town is situated on the east coast of Paxos. It is named after a pupil of Paul the Apostle who is believed to have brought the Christian faith to the island. Gaios features beautiful architecture that shows a strong Venetian influence, with colorful buildings lining the harbor and narrow streets winding back from the water.
As the main hub of the island, Gaios is where most of the shops, cafes, and tavernas are located. The small islands that guard the harbor are historical sites themselves. On Agios Nikolaos, there are the ruins of a Venetian fortress built in the 15th century. On Panagia island, there is a church and a monastery. Gaios serves as the main point for boat trips to other parts of Paxos and to the nearby island of Antipaxos.
