A Tranquil Little Harbour in Gaios, Paxos

Gaios Harbour is a natural, sheltered port on the east coast of Paxos, a small Greek island in the Ionian Sea. The town of Gaios, which is the capital of Paxos, wraps around this harbor. Its calm waters are created by two small islands that lie directly in front of the town, acting as a breakwater. These islets are Agios Nikolaos and Panagia.

The way the islets sit protects the main harbor from the open sea, creating a calm channel that is sometimes compared to a fjord. This layout makes the harbor a popular stop for all types of boats, from small fishing vessels to larger yachts and ferries. The port is the main point of arrival and departure for Paxos, connecting the island with Corfu and the Greek mainland.

Along the harbor’s edge, there is a lively waterfront promenade. This area is lined with buildings built in the Venetian style, which house many restaurants, cafes, and small shops. The islets themselves add to the scenery and history; Agios Nikolaos holds the ruins of an old Venetian fortress, and Panagia has a monastery. Gaios Harbour is the busy, central point of life on Paxos, where boats and people come and go all day long.
