Why Salento Was the Most Magical Stop of My Colombia Trip

During my journey across Colombia, Salento quickly became one of my favorite stops. Tucked in the lush hills of the Quindío department, this charming town blends colorful colonial architecture, friendly locals, and jaw-dropping nature.

🏞️ My Experience - What Made It Special:
- The Hike to the Cocora Valley (Valle de Cocora): This is a must-do. Hiking through the cloud forest to see the world’s tallest wax palm trees is unforgettable. I chose to do the full loop (about 5-6 hours), and it was well worth the effort. Don’t miss the hummingbird sanctuary (Acaime) along the way - it's a peaceful detour with hot chocolate and hundreds of tiny birds.
- The Town Itself: Salento’s main street, Calle Real, is full of vibrant houses, artisan shops, and cafes. I loved strolling around, taking photos, and trying local snacks like arepas de choclo and trucha (trout), a specialty of the area.
- Coffee Farm Tour (Finca): I visited Finca El Ocaso, just a short ride or walk from town. The tour was informative and fun - I learned how coffee is grown, harvested, and processed, and of course, tasted some freshly brewed cups in the middle of a stunning landscape.

- Best Time to Visit: Salento is pleasant year-round, but try to avoid weekends or holidays if you want a quieter experience. Weekdays are less crowded, especially in Cocora Valley.
- How to Get There: From Bogotá or Medellín, fly to Pereira or Armenia, then take a bus or shared transport (approx. 1-1.5 hours). Direct buses from Medellín also run (7-8 hours).
- Where to Stay: There are hostels, boutique hotels, and coffee farm stays. I stayed in a cozy guest house just outside of town with amazing views - staying a little outside gives you more peace and stunning scenery.
- What to Pack: A light rain jacket (weather can shift fast), sturdy hiking shoes (Cocora gets muddy), and layers - it’s cooler in the mornings and evenings.
- Money Matters: Bring cash. Most places are cash-only. There are ATMs in town, but they can run out, especially on weekends.
- Getting Around: The Jeep Willys are iconic and fun. They’re the main transport to Cocora Valley and local fincas. Head to the main square to catch one.

Salento has a magical mix of natural beauty, culture, and warmth that makes it unforgettable. Whether you're chasing epic views or sipping world-class coffee, it’s a destination that deserves a spot on every Colombia itinerary.
