Atago Shrine, the guardian deity of Sendai, is located in the city of trees, Sendai, and enshrines the fire god Kagutsuchi-no-Kami.
It's also famous as a power spot.
The stairs are quite steep, so wear sneakers.
The observation deck offers a sweeping view of Sendai city.
The shrine is home to Japan's largest Karasu Tengu and Otengu, who are said to guide the deities and protect the people.
Atago Shrine was located in Yonezawa, the base of the Date clan during the Sengoku period.
When Date Masamune decided to relocate his base in 1600, this time to Sendai.
Atago Shrine wasn't the only one to move around with the Date clan; many temples, shrines, and towns were relocated and allocated land within the castle town of Sendai Castle.
Due to severe decay of the main hall, it underwent partial dismantling and repair work from 2000 to 2001 (Heisei 12 to 2001).
