The north of Xingye Road is Beili (北里), and the south is Nanli (南里). This street was built as a signal for the Shanghai redevelopment project, and was previously a densely packed apartment complex with Shikumen-style buildings.
Shikumen (石库门) style refers to Shanghai's unique architectural style that was popular in China in the 1920s, combining Chinese and Western architecture.
In order to preserve the old culture, the buildings were protected while the streets were revitalized, and the area was transformed into a bustling street lined with stylish shops and restaurants that harmonize tradition and modernity.

Now, it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in all of China, leading Shanghai's trends, and it is a must-see for foreign tourists visiting Shanghai, with many more tourists than residents.
