According to the Qing Dynasty's Kangxi and Qianlong Puqi County Chronicles, "The place where the Jin Dynasty immortal Ge Hong ascended to heaven is Gexian Mountain, ten miles south of the Yahuan..." Gexian Mountain in Chibi is located in Zhongping Village, Guantangyi Town, Chibi City, at an altitude of 642.7 meters above sea level and covering an area of ​​6 square kilometers. It is 18 kilometers east of Xianning's Xingxing Bamboo Sea, with a road connecting it to Tiancheng District in Chongyang to the south. It borders Mingzhu Lake in southern Hubei to the west, and faces Suiyang Mountain in Tuanpuxianyuan to the north. It is named after Ge Hong, a renowned Jin Dynasty chemist and medical scientist, who practiced Taoism and ascended to heaven there.

Mount Gexian boasts dozens of naturally formed rock formations depicting animals of varying sizes and expressions, as well as a collection of Taihu stones. According to Wang Yuejin, director of the Gexian Mountain Ecological Development Zone, the legendary Ge Hong ascended to heaven on this mountain. The Taihu stones and the surrounding dozen or so rock formations resembling turtles and lions all accompanied Gexian. The lion-like rock is 6.7 meters tall and 3.8 meters long; the turtle-shaped rock is 2 meters wide and 3.6 meters long.

According to the records on the broken stele preserved in the mountain, in 354 AD, Ge Hong traveled along the river to Gexian Mountain to collect herbs and make elixirs. He passed away here on March 3, 364 AD at the age of 81.

　　Surveyors of the "Intangible Cultural Heritage" project also discovered a spring atop this mountain, 674.75 meters above sea level, that never overflows or dries up. Wang Yuejin explained that in September 1996, a television crew filmed the spring on the mountain. Village officials organized 230 villagers to scoop water from the spring, finding it inexhaustible, a truly remarkable phenomenon.
