Transportation: Take the high-speed train to Shanghai Hongqiao Station. Shanghai’s metro is very convenient, and most attractions are accessible. Especially Line 2, which passes by Jing’an Temple, Nanjing Road, The Bund, Oriental Pearl Tower, and Shanghai Tower.
Itinerary:
Day 1: Shanghai Tower (4A) — The Bund — Nanjing Road
Shanghai Tower, standing 632 meters tall, is the tallest building in China and the third tallest in the world. Along with the nearby Shanghai World Financial Center and Jin Mao Tower, it forms the Lujiazui "three-piece set." Take the elevator to the 118th floor to see the Oriental Pearl Tower right below. The 360° panoramic glass offers a full view of Shanghai. After leaving Shanghai Tower, walk 500 meters to Dongchang Road Pier. For just two yuan, you can take a ferry to the Bund ferry terminal on the opposite bank, which is much cheaper than taking a cruise on the Huangpu River. My mother said this is the best value activity in Shanghai. The night view of the Bund is beautiful; it’s recommended to visit after exploring Nanjing Road.
Day 2: Yuyuan Garden (4A) — City God Temple — Site of the First National Congress of the CPC (5A) — Jing’an Temple
Yuyuan Garden is a private garden built by Pan Yunduan, a former Sichuan provincial governor. It is much smaller than Suzhou’s Humble Administrator’s Garden and Tiger Hill. The City God Temple is right next to the Yuyuan Garden exit and is a Taoist temple. The site of the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China is also a 5A attraction. History enthusiasts can visit to experience this historically significant meeting, which was held in such a small room. Truly a spark that can start a prairie fire. Jing’an Temple is a temple located in the bustling city center, with a roof covered entirely in golden tiles, making it very unique.
Dining: For breakfast, we recommend Shanghai’s specialty snacks at Xiao Yang Shengjian, known for their pan-fried buns and duck blood vermicelli soup. The buns are juicy and flavorful. For lunch, Huafu (Lujiazui Central Branch) is recommended, offering excellent tableware, presentation, and taste. Dining prices on Nanjing Road and The Bund tend to be higher.
Accommodation: We recommend the Jinling Purple Mountain Hotel Shanghai. It is located next to Metro Line 2 in Lujiazui, close to Shanghai Tower, a five-star hotel with a nice environment and reasonable prices.
