Yu Garden (Yuyuan Garden) in Shanghai—showcasing its elegant pavilions over water, intricate bridges, lush architecture, and tranquil design that feels like a peaceful escape amid the city's bustle. Name & Origin: Called Yu Garden (豫园, Yù Yuán), meaning "Garden of Peace and Comfort," it was built between 1559 and 1577 by Ming Dynasty official Pan Yunduan for his parents’ retirement, as an act of filial piety. It originally took around two decades to complete and ultimately depleted the family's wealth. Design & Structure: Spanning approximately 2 hectares (5 acres) within Shanghai's Old City, Yu Garden exemplifies classical Jiangnan-style gardening with poetic design—featuring winding paths, rockeries, ponds, pavilions, halls, and zigzag bridges.
