As part of my spring itinerary in Shangri-La, I visited Napa Lake (纳帕海) in the afternoon — and the golden light made the vast highland wetland glow with quiet beauty. Though it’s a seasonal lake and the water level varies in spring, the open grasslands, shallow reflective pools, and dramatic mountain backdrop made it breathtaking.
In the soft light of late day, yaks and horses roamed freely, casting long shadows across the fields. Prayer flags waved from small hilltops, and the air was clear and cool. The landscape felt endless, and the silence was powerful — only broken by the distant hum of a motorbike or bird call.
Napa Lake isn’t just a photo spot; it’s a place to slow down and witness life on the Tibetan plateau, where humans and nature still move together with the seasons.
Travel Tips:
• Best time to visit: Afternoon in spring for soft golden light and calm atmosphere.
• Water levels may be low: But the wetland grasslands are still scenic and full of wildlife.
• Ideal for landscape photography: Bring a wide lens to capture the sky-meets-earth feel.
• Wear layers and sun protection: The highland sun is strong even when it’s cool.
• Oxygen bottle recommended: Especially for those sensitive to high altitude (3,200m+).
• Walk slowly: The terrain is flat but the thin air can make you tire easily.
How to Get There:
• By car or Didi from Shangri-La Old Town: Around 20–25 minutes.
• By bicycle: Doable but challenging due to altitude and rough roads.
• By private tour or local driver: Can be paired with stops at Songzanlin Monastery or Shika Snow Mountain.
• No fixed entrance fee: But you may be asked to pay a small access fee by local villagers.
