Datong Totally Surprised Me

#springitinerary Datong wasn’t even on my radar, but wow, I’m glad I went. This city’s got that gritty, real China feel mixed with jaw-dropping history. First stop: Yungang Grottoes. Literal caves carved with giant Buddhas and crazy-detailed statues, like, how did they even do this 1,500 years ago?! Mind blown.
Then there’s the Hanging Temple, which is somehow just chilling on the side of a cliff like it's no big deal. Totally wild. The city itself is super chill, not super touristy, which is nice, and walking around the rebuilt old town at night felt peaceful and kind of magical. There’s history everywhere, but without the big crowds and chaos. Also, the food? Underrated. Think hearty northern-style noodles and warm, comforting flavors. Datong’s definitely rough around the edges, but that’s part of the charm. If you're into epic sights and low-key local feels, this one’s worth the trip.
