Engetsuto is one of the tourist spots in Shirahama Onsen, a town of hot springs and pandas. It is said that the island got its name from the moon-shaped sea cave that was created in the center of the island by sea erosion.
Only for a few days a year, including the spring and autumn equinoxes, the setting sun fills the sea cave completely, allowing you to enjoy a spectacular view that you can't see anywhere else.
