The living, breathing history of Angkor Wat, Cambodia 🇰🇭

#Southeast Asia Travel

Angkor Wat is a stone temple of the Khmer Empire from the 12th century.
It was abandoned in the jungle for 400 years,
and then discovered by the French in the 19th century.

Most Hindu temples are temples for Brahma/Shiva,
but Angkor Wat is said to have worshipped [Vishnu], the Hindu god of peace.

That's why there are Hindu ruins everywhere.

Since Cambodia is mostly a plain area,
where did they get all these stone sculptures?

They say they dug up the stones from the mountains about 30km away and transported them by elephants.

It is now a Hindu + Buddhist temple,
and there is a "Buddha Day" once a week,
and on this day, the 3rd floor of Angkor Wat is controlled.

On Buddha Day, the Buddha statue on the 3rd floor is
cleaned and cleaned.

I had a meaningful experience visiting Angkor Wat for two days on Buddha Day.

Angkor Wat is Angkor = city
Wat = temple

Siem Reap was the capital during the Khmer Empire,
and the direct translation is [temple in the city].
