What Lies Beneath Fort Canning, Singapore

Most tourists may know Fort Canning Park for its popular photo spot, the "Tree Tunnel," but few are aware that beneath this hill was once a military command center during World War II.

At that time, the British army built a defense system and command center on Fort Canning Hill, including fortifications, artillery, and various facilities. One of the key structures was the Battlebox — a secret underground bunker used as a strategic planning site to counter the Japanese army.

Today, the Battlebox is open to the public as an important historical museum in Singapore.

Inside, the rooms are meticulously recreated, including the communications room, signal room, meeting room, and intricately crafted wax figures that realistically convey the tense atmosphere during the war.

If you are interested in World War history or want to experience the site firsthand, you can arrange a visit at the front entrance office.
